Utilities: Wednesday Bias

In this analysis, a particular behaviour of the Utilities sector of the S&P500 index is highlighted.

Since 2010, the S&P500 Index has been on a steady upward trend, as we can see from the figure below.

Since 2010, along with the index, all companies have also experienced an increase in their value, as shown in the tables below.

However, if we analyse the returns for the different days of the week of the 28 companies that make up the index, we see that in contrast to the upward trend of the index there is a predisposition of almost all companies to have negative returns on Wednesday.

In the table we have also highlighted the only 3 stocks (AES, NRG, AWK) for which the worst performing day of the week is not Wednesday.

This data becomes more valuable when comparing daily averages by days, taking all shares together.

When all the daily returns of the various stocks are combined, it is immediately evident that Wednesday is the only day where performance over the years has been negative.
